Benefit set for Audubon woman battling Stage IV cancer
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Amy Porter is a mom, a wife, a teacher at Roosevelt Elementary in Detroit Lakes and a beloved member of her community. But she is also facing the toughest battle of her life, as she has Stage IV metastatic breast cancer.
“Try to stay as normal as possible but at times you just think about everything happening. I just hope everyone understands how grateful we are. It’s just a blessing to our family that everyone is showing this kind of love and support.” said Porter.
She was 45-years-old when found out in July of 2022 and that it is not curable. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate after diagnosis for people with this type of cancer is 30%. Despite the circumstances and odds, Porter is keeping a positive mindset through the process. Especially if she were to one day beat this cancer.
“That would be great. At this point, I will always be on medication because of the diagnoses and it has already spread. I have the medications and if they are working without huge side effects. That’s the most I can ask for and that’s been great.” said Porter about her cancer treatments.
Porter has had her family support throughout this. Through the tough nights and treatments, always by her side when she needs it most.
“Our family has always been very close. It was of course hard for everybody to hear,” said Amy’s sister, Anne Braseth. “Like we say, we just keep going day to day. We know that it is always there in the background but we really just try to live live to the fullest everyday.”
And the community support has been crucial for Porter and her battle against cancer. Especially from her second graders at Roosevelt Elementary.
“Definitely a positive environment and you are thinking about school and the kids when you are there and even when you are not there. So it helps keep your focus on something else. They definitely help. Just their smiles and hugs everyday is a great thing.” said Porter.
The benefit has been set for January 27 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lake Park American Legion in Lake Park, Minnesota.
