Fire damages home near Chaffee, North Dakota, three people escape

CASS COUNTY N.D. (KVRR-KFGO) – A home near Chaffee, North Dakota was heavily damaged by fire early Thursday. Chaffee is about 15 miles southwest of Casselton.
Casselton Assistant Fire Chief Adrian Kieffer says firefighters responded to a report of a house fire about 4:30 a.m. west of Chaffee but the firefighters cancelled the call as it turned out the fire was only a brush pile that had flared up.
Kieffer says about 10 minutes after that call was cancelled, the fire department was called to a house fire about 8 miles to the east of the original call. He says the fire was in the attic of the single-story home. Firefighters kept the house sealed up to stop the fire from getting any air and the crews were able to attack the blaze from the attic and the interior and get the fire out.
Three residents in the home had awakened and discovered the fire. They fled the house safely and called for help. The house was heavily damaged.
The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause.
