Winter storm with dangerous windchills hits Red River Valley

FARGO (KVRR) – The first winter storm in several weeks is moving though the Red River Valley with high winds and dangerous windchills.

Several schools across the region opted to cancel classes Tuesday.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is advising no travel. Conditions have become extremely difficult to near impossible to travel due to poor visibility in open areas and snow accumulation near sheltered areas and bridge decks.

The National Weather Service says broad areas of heavy snow combined with wind gusts up to 45 mph will create slick surfaces and near blizzard conditions.

The bands of heavier snow will start to taper off from west to east through midday today. The wind gusts will start to decrease this eveningĀ  into the late night hours.

Hazardous windchills will fall to around 20 below today and between 20 to 30 below tonight through Wednesday morning.
