Police working on plan to address exhibition driving

FARGO (KVRR) – Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski says an increase in speeding, dangerous driving and loud mufflers has led to a “multitude of public safety concerns” that police are working to address.

“We hear those concerns and we are actively doing everything we can to attempt to address them,” Zibolski said in a video released on social media.

“Those individuals or groups who continue to participate in exhibition driving, speeding, racing and/or driving vehicles that have illegal or loud exhaust systems cause safety and quality-of-life issues for all of us.”

On June 10, Zibolski says he will present the Fargo City Commission with a plan to take further action, including the possibility of seizing certain vehicles and declaring them a public nuisance.

Zibolski also says the number of drivers who don’t comply with traffic stops is on the rise. In 2023, Fargo police conducted 8,829 traffic stops, but 256 drivers refused to stop; about one out of every 34 traffic stops.

Zibolski is calling for higher fines and for the legislature to pass a law requiring vehicle owners to identify the driver of a fleeing vehicle.
