End Unfair Property Tax Group Turns In Petitions To N.D. Secretary of State

BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — Supporters of a measure to prohibit the majority of property taxes across North Dakota has submitted paperwork to the Secretary of State’s office.

They delivered around 1,100 petitions with nearly 41,000 signatures.

Around 31,000 valid signatures are needed.

Secretary of State Michael Howe’s office now has 35-days to determine if the signatures are valid and to place the constitutional initiative on the ballot in November.

Former state legislator Rick Becker is the chairperson of the sponsoring committee, End Unfair Property Tax.

“They lied to us in 2012,” said Becker.

“12 years ago they promised relief reform, they didn’t give it so now we’re taking it. We are going to give it to ourselves because they would not give it to us. Because they believe sadly that they can spend the money better than we can spend it.”

A group called  Keep It Local North Dakota is against the measure.

The chair of the group calls it a “bad scheme with no plan to replace the $1.3 billion dollars of lost revenue”.
