Attorney: “Moen has a good case for an appeal” after guilty verdict in wife’s murder

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — A jury has found a West Fargo man guilty of murdering his wife.

Spencer Moen has been found guilty of killing his wife, Sonja Moen, in their home last year.

Family members walked out of the courtroom, crying and hugging one another.

“All of the witnesses had a piece of the puzzle to present to the jury. Each one had something that we felt that was important and critical,” said Renata Olafson Selzer an Assistant State’s Attorney.

The verdict comes a year after the murder and after Spencer Moen pleaded not guilty. Two of the witnesses included the couple’s young children.

“I’m very aware of the drawbacks of calling children to the stand; it’s not something that we took lightly at all. Unfortunately those kids were witnesses, the two six-year old twins were witnesses to parts of the events that happened in that house,” said Selzer.

The prosecution showed graphic videos and pictures from the autopsy, but they believe it was necessary to reach a conviction.

“It’s the right result, it’s the just result, but there are no winners,” Selzer said.

Moen’s attorney, Richard Varianno, says he doesn’t agree with the verdict.

Varianno says based on some evidence-related issues, he believes Moen has a good case for an appeal.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
