NDSU soccer chasing history

FARGO (KVRR) – The (5-1-1) North Dakota State Bison are chasing history for their soccer program. They are one win away on Sunday from clinching the regular season Summit League title for the first time since 2016.

They still have one more conference foe to take on and that’s the (1-4-2) St. Thomas Tommies. NDSU Head Coach Mike Regan said his squad of young talent and veterans are keeping the focus on Sunday’s game before thinking about what the postseason will look like.

“In conference play, they are all important. Regardless if they are the first or the eighth. We’ve been preparing for St. Thomas the same way we prepared for South Dakota State, same way we prepared for South Dakota and we’ll continue to make sure that we’re heading down that road.” said Coach Regan.

These players know what is at stake. They win on Sunday, it’s the top overall seed in the Summit League conference tournament and host the semifinals and the championship game at the Dacotah Field in Fargo. The offense has been on fire this season with freshman Morgan Russmann leading the team with nine goals, the defense has equally been clutch for this program.

“All year our defense has been super solid, even if our offense hasn’t quite clicked on game days. So being able to know that, even though our offense can struggle sometimes we still can get goals out of it and then if we get goals out of it, we can rely on our defense to get us those wins.” said Elana Webber.

The coaching staff believes the defense has been the unsung heroes of this team. The back half has only given up 18 goals in 17 games to keep them alive in most of the matches they’ve played. The confidence has been there with this roster, dating back to the end of their season last year.

“Coming off last year, obviously beating Denver in our last conference game, it was great to come in to this season knowing we had that momentum, we had a lot to give this year. I feel like it’s a really good start as a sophomore to build off, the seniors are leaving us with a really good legacy and a good foundation to go forward with.” said Amaya Garrett.

The Bison will take on the Tommies on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
