MAPLETON, N.D. (KVRR-KFGO) – Two people were hurt in a crash two miles west of Mapleton that included three semis and an SUV Sunday night.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94.

The Highway Patrol says a semi lost control on the ice and jackknifed. The truck went into the median with the trailer in the one lane of the interstate.

A second semi braked after seeing the first truck and also jackknifed.

Both semis were in the median with their trailers in a driving lane when an SUV hit one of the trailers.

The driver of the SUV, 26-year-old Williametta Barkar of West Fargo, got out of her vehicle. That’s when a third semi tried to brake and jackknifed, hitting the SUV.

Barkar suffered minor injuries when her SUV hit the trailer. The driver of the third semi, 73-year-old Barry Nasea of Avonlea, Saskatchewan, also suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The other two semi drivers were not hurt.

The driver of the first semi, 42-year-old Ahmed Abdi of Hopkins, Minnesota, was cited for care required.

The Highway Patrol, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Casselton Fire, and Casselton Ambulance all responded.
