Snowmobile Season Begins in North Dakota

Trail availability is subject to change given snowfall amounts.

NORTH DAKOTA – Big day for outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

It is the official start to snowmobile season in North Dakota.

The state has 2,800 miles of snowmobile trails to cruise and explore.

However, it takes work keeping that much area safe and well-maintained.

So trail groomers are out and about, making sure there’s adequate snow cover and putting signs in place.

North Dakota Parks and Rec suggests you download their free Snowmobile North Dakota app – to get updates on trail status and to help you plan out your trip.

“If you’re new to snowmobiling or if you want to go check out a new area, how do you know where those trails are with some of those stops?” said Tony Hillig, the Recreation Chief for North Dakota Parks and Rec.

“Gas is important, if you want to stop for a cup of coffee or a warm meal, those things are important. And that app kinda lets you explore those different trail networks.”

The department also wants to remind everyone that children 10 and older without a valid driver’s license have to take a safety certification class before they can operate a snowmobile.
