Tacos Reynosa brings taste of Mexico, warmth of family to West Fargo

WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – While the temperatures are unmistakably North Dakota, inside of Tacos Reynosa, there’s a taste of Mexico and the warmth of a family.

“I’m really happy. This is something that I started at first with my daughter Margaly. She encouraged me at first to start selling. And then my son, he’s made this dream possible.”

Owners Yadira and Javier Ortiz Sr. grew up in Reynosa, Mexico.

“Very happy life. I remember my childhood being really happy, easy.”

“My mother, she was a really good cook. She showed me all kinds of recipes.”

They left Mexico for Texas, pursuing a dream of a better life that eventually led them to North Dakota

They worked as laborers in the fields, and in construction striving to give their kids the American Dream.

“They come from very humble beginnings. Our grandparents worked extremely hard, and we try to keep the tradition alive, going with that too.”

It’s been a long process to get the taqueria open. Javier Sr. and Javier Jr. worked construction jobs in the morning, coming in to work on renovations after their shifts.

“It was October when we got this place, so it was working 16 hours a day, and then coming in here working late nights trying to remodel it to what it looks like now.”

They’re aiming to bring a Mexican Diner feel to West Fargo, with food that is authentic to their experience.

“Take it like how a cowboy shapes his hat. How he shapes his hat is where he’s from. So the seasoning that you put in your food and the love you put into it is where you’re from in Mexico.”

And the warmth of a family run taqueria.

“Sometimes I really want a place to go and have something that really fills my stomach. Something warm, I don’t know, but something like home taste.”
