HANKINSON, N.D. (KVRR) – Firefighters are on the scene of a fire inside St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson, North Dakota.

Diocese of Fargo spokesman Paul Braun said the west tower of the century-old church was “engulfed” in flames when firefighters arrived.

Late Monday afternoon, Braun said it appeared the fire may be spreading through the roof of the building as smoke was seen coming from the south end of the church over the sanctuary and sacristy.

Richland County Emergency Manager Brett Lambrecht says fire departments from Hankinson and several surrounding communities,  including Lidgerwood, Mantador and Wahpeton responded to the blaze.

Lambrecht says the fire is being fought by crews inside and outside the building.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. The cause of the fire isn’t known.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
