Churches United Says Cold Weather Is Bringing In Demand For More Shelter
MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — As the frigid weather impacts our region, homeless shelters like Churches United in Moorhead are working to help people avoid the cold weather.
Within the past few months, Churches United has gone through a rollercoaster of financial issues while trying to keep its doors open.
The shelter is beyond full each night.
With the demand continuously growing in the area, the shelter has had to make a waiting list for people to obtain a bed.
So far there are more than 300 people on the list.
Churches United has recommended that people looking for shelter try Micah’s Mission in Moorhead.
“We have a lot of people who are needing to get into shelter that with the weather the way it is within eight minutes there can be frostbite. So we’re starting to see some of those cases of frostbite coming through and we expect through the weekend that it’s going to become even more dire,” said Ginny Stowe, Chief Operations Officer at Churches United Homeless Shelter.
In the past month, Churches United has helped 15 people find a home and are hoping to help even more.
