BRECKENRIDGE, MN – The Breckenridge High Cowboys have experienced a bit of an athletic setback, with both the boys’ basketball and football teams being forced to forfeit multiple games from their 2023-24 seasons.

The official violation has not yet been confirmed, but sources say a player on the teams actually lived in Wahpeton and not in Breckenridge.

The Minnesota State High School League has made the Cowboys forfeit every game in which that player participated.

The Cowboy football team was 5-5 on the year – that record now becomes 0-10, while the basketball team goes from 10-13 to 3 and 20.

Breckenridge Athletic Director Chad Fredericksen released some remarks, saying, in part, “We deeply regret the impact this has had on the athlete, our teams and our community,” and “We have learned from this situation and pride ourselves on following all rules set by the MSHSL and will continue to do so.”
