Boys & Girls Club Hosts Annual Polar Fest Plunge in Detroit Lakes
The numbers were bigger than ever this year - over 200 participants and $70,000 raised.
DETROIT LAKES, MN (KVRR) – Splashes and cheers rang out from in front of the Lakeside Tavern on Detroit Lake, as well over 200 congregated, coming in from far and wide to participate in a polar plunge, benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes.
You saw plenty of themed costumes, excited but tentative groups – but also heartwarming stories, such the family members of Pat Johnston.
A longtime plunge supervisor, Johnston passed away 10 years ago from a heart attack.
Family members jumped this year to honor that anniversary, but also because they raised $10,587 in Pat’s memory.
The Boys & Girls Club say they’re always in need of those funds.
“It will help cover the cost of busing over 100 kids every single day from school to get to our club,” explained Alyssa Hoskins, director of resource development. “We serve every single child that comes through the door a hot meal and a healthy snack every single day.”
With this being the 29th iteration of the plunge, it’s clear that people are not going to stop coming back.
“I totally loved it, and I will do it again, and I love to raise money for children and people and communities in need.”
