MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — By a unanimous vote, Moorhead City Council has hired Fargo Police Capt. Chris Helmick as the city’s next police chief.

Helmick got a little chocked up while addressing the council following the vote.

He said he wants the city to spend the next few weeks honoring retiring Chief Shannon Monroe and his 30 years of service to the city.

Helmick has lived in Moorhead for 20 years.

He becomes police chief on April 14.

Helmick graduated from MSUM and the FBI National Academy.

He has served in law enforcement since 2001.

He was one of four finalists for the job.
