Ten-Year-Old Presents Petition for Backyard Chickens To Dilworth City Council
DILWORTH, Minn. (KVRR) — Ariel Olson is taking on the rising cost of eggs and city hall all at the same time and she’s only ten.
The Dilworth girl used the public comment period during tonight’s city council meeting to try and get support for backyard chickens.
She presented four key reasons why it would benefit the community including a stable and safe food source, food quality, cost and education.
Ariel even presented guidelines followed by surrounding cities that allow backyard chickens like Moorhead and Fargo.
Her idea resulted in a Change.org petition which already has 150 signatures.
“I urge the council to consider this petition and allow our community the same opportunity that neighboring cities already enjoy,” Ariel told the council.
Mayor Chad Olson responded, “Ariel that was fantastic. It was great to have you here this evening and remember we won’t make a decision this evening but it will give us conversation as we move forward.”
Current Dilworth ordinances say chickens and other livestock cannot be kept within city limits other than by certain veterinarians.
