(FARGO) – A Fargo veterinary clinic is reporting an outbreak of canine parvovirus.

Prairie Winds Veterinary Center has confirmed cases in three litters of puppies, a juvenile pup, and most recently, a single household puppy. Of the 21 puppies treated, so far 19 have recovered.

Dr. Alicia Wisnewski says parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is often fatal. She’s urging pet owners to make sure their dogs are up-to-date with their vaccinations.

Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure against parvovirus. Dogs who receive the full series of vaccinations and maintain their boosters are significantly less likely to contract the virus.

Wisnewski says with advances in veterinary medicine, including the availability of monoclonal antibody treatment, the survivability rate for parvovirus has improved considerably, but it’s important to note that treatment can be costly, and there may be long-lasting effects on a pet’s health even after recovery.
