Second “Safe City Nights” brings together community and first responders in Moorhead
The first was held at Robert Asp Elementary, while the third will be held in Queens Park.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – Moorhead saw its second “Safe City Nights” celebration of the summer.
The series is coordinated by Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League, who help to bring in all the public agencies in the city.
The department says that for the first Safe City Nights event at Robert Asp Elementary, they beat their attendance projection by over 100, so it’s growing in popularity.
This one, at Ellen Hopkins Elementary, featured free pizza and ice cream as well as a bounce house.
Plus, the agencies say that meeting people meeting them in person makes the average citizen more likely to feel comfortable during a stressful situation.
“People call 911 on the worst day of their life, not the best day. No-one calls us to say hi,” explained Moorhead Police Department Sgt. Scott Kostohryz. “When a fire truck shows up, it can be big and loud and scary. When police show up, it’s usually because something serious is going on. So, we do these kind of events to let people know we’re here to help.”
The next and final Safe City Night is scheduled for July 16 at Queens Park.
