Two Dead After Fatal Shooting in Moorhead

UPDATE: The incident has been classified as a murder-suicide.

MOORHEAD, MN (KVRR) – Two people are dead after an overnight shooting in Moorhead.

The Moorhead Police Department says that just before 4 in the morning on August 16, they responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment building in the 1100 block of 2 Avenue South.

Officers arrived and located two adult victims, a 53- and 21-year-old, both deceased from gunshot wounds. They did also recover a firearm at the scene of the incident.

A juvenile and another adult were in the apartment when the shooting occurred, but neither sustained any injuries. MPD says that both of them are cooperating with the investigation. The department is not seeking any suspects, and no one is in custody.

Currently, there is no ongoing threat to public safety, but the public is being asked to avoid the immediate area. The Minnesota BCA is presently processing the scene. Residents of the complex have been allowed to stay in their units.

Firstly, they corrected the age of one of the people involved, clarifying that he was 53 years old, not 43.

Also, the two were known to each other, and investigators believe at this time this was a murder-suicide.

Police Chief Chris Helmick said he understands concerns regarding violence in Moorhead, but assured everyone that the department remains fully committed to protecting residents and maintaining low crime rates.
