Cass County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Scam Targeting Families of Incarcerated Individuals

The Sheriff's Office reiterates that the only way they accept payment from families is in-person at the Cass County Jail.

CASS COUNTY, N.D. (KVRR) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam tactic in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

According to the office, scammers are using publicly available jail rosters to identify incarcerated persons and then contact their families, saying that a nominal payment is required for “pre-trial release services”. The scammer falsely identifies as a deputy with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and, at times, will use a spoofed phone number that appears to come from a legitimate Cass County Sheriff’s Office line.

While the office does offer some pre-trial release programs, they are again emphasizing that the only way to participate in these is to bring payment to the Cass County Jail in-person. Anyone asking you to provide money in an alternative fashion is attempting to scam you.

The office says if you receive one of these calls, you should hang up immediately.  If you have questions, contact the Community Service Unit at (701) 271-2909.
