Valley City High School teacher under investigation for post about Charlie Kirk

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (KVRR) — A social media post made by a Valley City High School teacher about the death of Charlie Kirk has received some backlash, and now the school is investigating.

Tyler Thompson, a social studies teacher at Valley City High School, posted on Instagram about Kirk. Thompson called Kirk “racist,” “transphobic,” “sexist,” and more. He also wrote that he no empathy for people like Kirk, but only for his children.

Many Valley City residents took to Facebook over the post–with many calling for his termination.

“I feel like if a news commenter got fired because of what he said, he definitely, as an educator, should be fired for his words.”

One person who said she worked alongside Thompson as a para teacher said she disagreed with how Thompson decided to post what he did, but also said he is a great teacher.

“I will say that Mr. Thompson is a great teacher. I was a para in his class all year last year and not once did he ever push his political views on his students or even speak to the kids about his political views.”

Other people wrote that Thompson was only stating the facts and that it was on his personal account.
We contacted Superintendent Joshua Johnson for a comment. Johnson told us that on the advice of school district attorneys, he declined our invitation for an on-camera interview.”

Johnson also said he can’t comment on Thompson’s employment status, but Thompson is still listed as a staff member on the school’s website.
