ST. PAUL (KVRR/FOX9) — Minnesota Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth is jumping into the crowded field of Republicans running for governor.

The 58-year-old from Cold Spring represents District 13A in central Minnesota which includes the cities of Cold Spring and St. Joseph.

She was named speaker back in January during a power struggle between house Republican and DFL members.

FOX 9 reports Demuth plans to hold a news conference on Monday to officially launch her campaign.

There are already seven Republicans running for the governor’s seat including former GOP endorsed nominee Dr. Scott Jensen who lost the race in 2022 to Gov. Tim Walz.

Democrat Walz is running for a third term and if he wins, he would be the first person in state history to win a third consecutive four-year term.

Rep. Kristin Robbins, Republican candidate for Governor of Minnesota, released a statement saying, “Speaker Lisa Demuth has been a friend since we were both elected in 2018, but I’m the only conservative Republican who’s a proven winner in the suburbs, and the only one who can actually defeat two-term Governor Tim Walz. I’ve led the fight against the rampant fraud in the Walz Administration, and as Governor, I’ll fight the fraud, lower our taxes, and stop the insanity.”

The DFL Party released its own statement.
“The CEOs and right-wing corporate lobbyists picked Lisa Demuth because they know she’ll protect hedge funds over health care,” said Minnesota DFL Chair Richard Carlbom. “As Speaker, she’s shown Minnesota exactly what she’ll prioritize. She’ll cut taxes for massive corporations while cutting funding for schools and seniors. She’ll protect tax loopholes for her donors while opposing relief for workers and middle-class families. Lisa Demuth is the corporate candidate in this race. If Lisa Demuth and the billionaires win, Minnesotans lose.”
