FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Fargo School Board has narrowed down its list of 29 possible names for the new northside elementary school to just five.

They include Unity with 170 votes, Martin Luther King, Jr. with 170 votes, North Star with 186 votes, Horace Mann with 200 votes and the top vote getter is Prairie Rose with 208.

People spoke for and against naming the school after slain Republican activist Charlie Kirk, which was on the list of 29 finalists out of over 430 unique name submissions.

Variations on Kirk’s name were submitted 92 times.

One school board member shared her thoughts about naming the school after such a controversial figure.

“We should choose a name that reflects kindness, unity and pride in our communities not someone who brings division in our communities especially in Fargo-Moorhead area that is so diverse,”said Nyamal Dei.

The final name will be chosen at the board’s next meeting on November 25.

The new school will consolidate Horace Mann–Roosevelt and Madison attendance areas and open in fall 2028.
