FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Many military veterans and other members of the Fargo-Moorhead community braved the cold on December 3 to honor a Marine who would have otherwise gone unclaimed.

According to the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard, the recently deceased Rickey Allen Boyd passed on without any known family or friends to take possession of his remains.

The Guard then organized a memorial service at the Fargo National Cemetery.

Boyd served in the U.S. Marines from 1977 to 1980.

Veterans in attendance said it’s heartening that many who did not know Boyd in life still turned out to respect his memory.

“It’s wonderful,” said Curtis Cavalier, who served as chaplain for the event. “I think it’s going to get even better.”

Boyd died in December of last year at the age of 66.

A cause of death has not been released.
