Surveillance to Continue for Chronic Wasting Disease

North Dakota Game and Fish is continuing a surveillance program for chronic wasting disease, or CWD.

Wildlife officials will sample hunter-killed deer from 17 hunting units in the western part of the state for both CWD and bovine tuberculosis.

Moose and elk killed in the state also are eligible for testing.

CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal.

There’s no evidence it can be transmitted naturally to people or livestock.

North Dakota’s deer gun season opens at noon Central time on Friday and runs through November 22.
