6th Annual ‘Battle of the Buns’ Event Strives to Raise Awareness of Rectal Cancer

The disease, unfortunately, is only becoming more and more prevalent in individuals under the age of 50.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – A local non-profit focused on rectal cancer awareness held their biggest annual event this Saturday.

Love Your Buns hosted the annual Battle of the Buns at Living Waters Lutheran Church in Fargo.

The event has two competition aspects: a traditional “battle of the bands” setup, and local bakers showing off their tastiest treats to try and earn attendees’ votes.

Love Your Buns was started by Sara DCamp back in 2021, when she was diagnosed with rectal cancer.

The disease eventually claimed her life – and doctors say that this particular form of cancer is affecting more and more young people every year, making awareness extremely important.

“For people that are under than the age of 50, it is now the number one cancer killer in the United States,” said Dr. John Bassett of Sanford Health. “This is not something where you’re in your 70s or 80s and those are the only people affected – we’re seeing young, healthy people that don’t have other medical problems that are getting diagnosed with colon cancer now.”

Representatives from Sanford were also displaying plans for the Peltier Lodge, a housing facility for cancer patients that will have a room named after Sara DCamp.
