Moorhead Public Library staff begin moving materials to new building

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — It’s the start of a new chapter, as the Moorhead Public Library staff have begun to move approximately 50,000 books, magazines, and movies. As they will soon open the doors to a brand new library.

“We’ve known for a long time that we needed a new building. Both because this building is in disrepair, but also because this building doesn’t serve the public well anymore. People use public libraries in different ways than they did in 1962 when the building opened. The new building will feature different and more dynamic spaces for the public to use,” said Megan Krueger, Moorhead Public Library Director.

The Loop has been a project several years in the making, from planning, designing, construction, and soon to its final finishing touches. And library staff are now working to transition into the new space.

“It’s a little more modern than our current building. But there’s still a lot of good wood tones and things like that. So there’s a little bit of a nod to this current building as well, which I think people will enjoy,” said Krueger.

The building is 48,000 square feet. When finished, it will include a walking track, an indoor playground, a presentation hall, study rooms, and a two-floor library. And while the space may be different, staff hope to invite people to visit and learn.

“I think the function of a library is a lot wider scope or has a larger scope than people think it does. It’s meant to be a place for the community to meet and learn. I hope that with this new building, it can feel more community-focused, as well as having excellent book materials for people to check out,” said Kate Ryan, Librarian Associate at Moorhead Library.

The Loop is expected to open its doors by early April.

The current library off of Main will continue to remain open as they transition into the new library.
