Processes in place if Mayor-elect Boschee decides to vacate state senate seat

FARGO — With Mayor-elect Josh Boschee preparing to take office, questions arise about what could happen to his District 44 Senate seat.
The Democrat was elected to the seat representing a large section of north Fargo in 2024.
If he resigns the position, District 44 Democratic NPL leaders would be responsible for choosing a replacement.
District Chair Jessie Smette says they would manage the process of accepting candidates and filling the position.
That nominee would then move through the process to fill the remainder of the term.
“If Josh resigns 94 days prior to the election in November, that gives our executive team the ability to decide who would fill that senate seat,” Smette said.
The timeline for selecting a replacement will depend on when the vacancy occurs.
