Trade Names Registered for Three UND Nickname Choices

A former Bismarck mayor has registered trade names for three of the five options for a new nickname for UND.

Marlan Haakenson says he hopes to interfere with the nickname selection process, because he believes ”North Dakota” should also be an option.

The five nickname options that will be voted on next month are Roughriders, North Stars, Fighting Hawks, Nodaks and Sundogs.

UND spokesman Peter Johnson says Haakenson’s move shouldn’t prevent the nickname selection process from moving forward.
