Grand Sky has officially put North Dakota on the map as the first commercial unmanned aircraft business and aviation park.

KVRR’s Brittany Ford was at the groundbreaking ceremony in Grand Forks and joins us LIVE with more. Brittany?

Ground is broken on America’s first drone business and aviation park.

Among the long list of people who pushed to make the project happen, Former Grand Forks City Commissioner John Schmisek who has been heavily involved in the project has been able to see his dream come to life.

“It’s a marvelous project, its marvelous project for the region, state, and to be a part of that probably one of the best projects I’ve ever worked on in my entire life,” said  John Schmisek Former GF Commissioner.

Grand Sky is expected to reach 1.2 million square feet in size, and stretch over 217 acres.

Grand Sky Zero one is the first UAS to be cleared to fly at Grand Sky.

The drone is a product of Sky Scopes, partner of Grand Sky and will be capturing the whole construction process.

It will allow the public to see Grand Sky as it is built from a drone’s point of a view.

“The most exciting initiative in the state of North Dakota is the Grand Sky project, and being able to fly first on an Air Force base is all the better because we’re flying for Grand Sky,” says Matt Dunlevy, CEO Sky Scopes.

Grand Sky could bring up to 3,000 jobs to the area and help boost the state’s economy.

Phase one of the project is expected to be done as early as next year.

“As early as March as next year this will be a busy aircraft transition center. There will be aircrafts transitioning to take off and land,” said Thomas Swoyer, Grand Sky Development President.

Grand Sky leaders were happy to present the first of many checks back to the state and county as a part of their public public private partnership.
