It’s arguably one of the toughest jobs out there, being a police officer.
The Fargo Police department is looking for people to join their team and they’re still taking applications.
But what does it take to put one a badge?
The Fargo Police Department is looking to replace officers leaving in the next few weeks.
They will have two openings, but may soon have more in the future if a grant pulls through.
They say they are looking for people with a certain kind of personality.
“We’re looking for those people that are consistent, have strong personalities but at the same time are compassionate and have that ability to help people,” says Fargo Police Department Sgt. Mike Bernier.
Many in the area realize the importance of adding new officers.
“There’s always room for more security around here just to make people feel safe,” says Brenna Akkerman of Fargo.
“I’m seeing a lot more, I guess transient population, especially in the alleyways and things like that,” says Mark Huesman of Barnesville.
“I’ve noticed over the years as Fargo’s grown that there seems to be a lot more crime going on just hear a lot more about it on the radio,” says Brandon Benson of Fargo.
“Fargo police say the rising crime in the metro doesn’t scare away the serious applicants, in fact it makes them more determined.”
“That usually likens people to want to get back into that business and get involved and want to help that much more,” says Sgt. Bernier.
The interview process is a long one;
It starts off with a physical agility test.
If they pass that, they take the written test.
Afterwards, there’s an oral interview.
They then have an intense background and reference check.
If all goes well, they do an interview with the chief and may get a conditional offer if there is an opening.
“Having the mindset that you want to help people in general is really what we’re looking for,” says Sgt. Bernier.
Applicants also must have some sort of police academy history.
It’s a process that keeps the people in Fargo safe.
The physical agility test and written test take place on Monday, September 14th.
