Possible Hate Crime On UND Campus

UND Police are investigating an alleged assault that happened at a fraternity house over the weekend and that frat has now been placed on limited operations, which restricts all formal activities.

The victim says he was assaulted and comments were made regarding his sexual orientation.

The alleged assault happened here at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house.
A non–UND student reported that he was assaulted early Sunday morning and sustained non–life threatening injuries.
Hannah Stende is a UND student and is surprised that something like this would happen at her school.

“I think it’s scary to think that assault could happen on our UND campus and we don’t want to think that anything like that would happen, but things do happen like that,” said Stende.

She’s also concerned that comments would be made about someone’s sexual orientation.

“Especially now in this time, we really should be accepting everyone, no matter what their sexual orientation is or anything like that,” said Stende.

Brad Thorson lives only two blocks away from the fraternity house.

“Well if that’s actually what happened and it was due to a person’s particular sexual orientation, that actually happened that’s unfortunate,” said Thorson of Grand Forks.

Police haven’t said what happened that night or what led up to the alleged assault.
They did receive a call from the same house about a physical altercation near the same time.

“We’re still really very early on in this investigation,” said Sgt. Daniel Weigel

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Grand Forks Police Department.
