A Minneapolis man faces charges after stealing a car and making a fake 9-1-1 call in Fargo.

Around 8:30 Tuesday night police stopped a car for speeding on south University Drive. The driver was 21-year-old Tayon Walker and he fled on foot after being pulled over.

Authorities discovered that the car, which had Wisconsin plates, was stolen. Just minutes later, police were dispatched to the Northport Royal Liquor Store on Broadway for a shooting that was called in.

They were then told that the shooting was actually at Royal Liquors on 32nd Avenue South.

They quickly determined there was no threat at either location so they traced the phone call. That led them back to Tayon Walker.

Police aren’t sure if he himself made the fake 9-1-1 call or if he paid someone else to.

“It’s not uncommon for someone to flee a traffic stop or some kind of crime scene area and our officers to engage in a foot chase. But to go to those extremes we don’t see that very often where they’ll make fictitious calls to divert our resources. And I think this is an example of how it wasn’t effective for him in the end,” says Lt. Michael Mitchell of Fargo Police.

Walker was arrested in the area of First Avenue South and University.

He faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing officers.
