Local Girls Honored With The Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Olivia Allen: Cheney Middle School; Ishika Gupta: Davies High School; Annika Kovar: Perham High School

Two girls who KVRR news has featured for their cultural and fundraising efforts are getting some national attention.

Olivia Allen and Ishika Gupta have been recognized as North Dakota’s top youth volunteers of 2019 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Award program.

Olivia is a sixth grader at Cheney Middle School.

Ishika is a senior at Davies High School.

Olivia was recognized for organizing four blanket-making events that have produced more than 300 fleece blankets for hospitalized or traumatized children.

Ishika started a nonprofit organization that donates bassinets for babies whose families lack a secure place for them to sleep.

One of the two Minnesota winners is from our area: Annika Kovar of Frazee is a senior at Perham High School.

She created a charity that has encouraged and helped 105 childcare facilities in 21 states to grow vegetable gardens for their kids.

In May, the girls will be awarded $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. to be celebrated.
