LIVE: Planning Your Veterans’ Day

MOORHEAD — Veterans Day is being observed Friday the 10th, with kids out of school and many city services pushed back or closed.

But for vets in the area, the big day’s not until Saturday.

The commander of the United Patriotic Bodies says there’s a reason for that.

Their organization sets their Veterans Day ceremonies to always fall on the eleventh, regardless of the day of the week.

That’s because it’s part of the original Armistice Day tradition from which Veterans Day comes.

The holiday was originally created to fall on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in observance of when the Allies and Germans stopped fighting at the end of World War I.

Cmdr. Jason Hicks stopped by the Morning Show to talk about the plans for the big ceremony with the United Patriotic Bodies starting at eleven Saturday morning at MSUM’s Center for the Arts, the evolution of the holiday, and how military service affects so many families in the region.
