LIVE: Score Some Entertainment

FARGO — if you’re looking to score some entertainment this fall, NDSU’s Challey School of Music is launching a new composing competition that’s your chance to hear from the composers of tomorrow.

It’s their new competition “Score Wars,” where high school composers come together in a “Top Chef”-style contest of wits, talent and creativity.

Students will get “secret ingredients” they have to include in their music.

The secret ingredients can be anything from “A-flat,” to “the prairie,” to “triangles” — but contestants won’t know what they are until the day of the competition.

The students take their secret ingredients and get to work.

Then, NDSU ensembles will perform the pieces and audience members and judges will vote for a winner.

NDSU Composer-in-Residence Kyle Vanderberg joined the Morning Show to talk about the inspiration behind “Score Wars” and share what some of his students have come up with to help inspire budding high school composers to try their hand at a brand-new piece of music.
