Local Red Cross volunteers helping with Helene recovery
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (KVRR) – Recovery efforts are continuing in the Southern U.S. after the devastating flooding from Hurricane Helene, and now they’re getting some help from volunteers from our region.
The American Red Cross Minnesota and Dakotas Region mobilized local volunteers to aid in the recovery efforts in the Carolinas.
They are currently helping to provide food and water to areas that have been without since Friday.
Western Dakota Red Cross Disaster Program Manager Nita Ritzke is in Charlotte, and she says that while progress is being made, there is still a long way to go.
“And it’s almost a case by case basis. In some communities they’ve managed to restore power. And I believe the last I saw, believe it or not, it’s down to only 700,000 residents without power.”
Ritzke added that those interested in volunteering with the Red Cross can find more information on their website.
