LIVE: Tubas take the spotlight, spreading cheer at TubaChristmas
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — It’s a family of instruments usually relegated to the bass line and the background, but at TubaChristmas, the tubas, euphoniums, baritones and sousaphones get their chance to shine and spread some Christmas cheer.
The event has been going on across the country for over 50 years, and in the Fargo-Moorhead area for almost as long. It unites performers of all ages, from middle-schoolers to retirees, who get a chance to come together over their love of tubas.
One performer, Dr. Nat Dickey, says that that sense of community is part of what makes TubaChristmas so special.
“You’ll see a ten year old come for the first time, and then there’s someone in their seventies who welcomes them in and has them sit next to them. So there’s really the sense of joy in playing together. We take turns leading, and so it’s really a celebration of that fellowship that comes with being not just a musician, but specifically a tuba player.”
The event will run between 11 A.M. and Noon Saturday at Brewhalla.
