LIVE: Yoga with Swords

WEST FARGO — It’s one of the only kind in the metro, and it’s giving you a chance to build a mind-body connection for the New Year, along with an excuse to play with dangerous weapons.

Agassiz Dojo in West Fargo is the metro’s location to learn traditional Japanese sword martial arts, including Japanese fencing and Sword Versus Stick.

There are courses for beginners as well as opportunities for more seasoned students.

Many of the movements, or kata, are formal and choreographed.

Some others are free, full-contact sparring.

Instructors say it’s been compared to yoga with swords, in that it uses breathing, posture and stretching as part of the discipline.

Instructor Bradley Anderson and senior student Michael Schult joined the Morning Show to talk about what drew them to the dojo, what sets it apart from other kinds of sport-type activity, and what you can get out of learning Japanese martial arts.
