LIVE: A Lucky Start for Lunar New Year
FARGO — Sometimes, after all the parties and presents of the winter holidays, from New Year’s Day onward, the rest of January can seem a little bit of a letdown.
But this year, a group of volunteers in the metro is helping to keep the party going.
Lunar New Year is just around the corner, and you’re invited to join.
For the first time, the group United Chinese Americans of Fargo-Moorhead is opening up its Chinese New Year’s celebration to the general public.
Members describe the holiday as being like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s all rolled into one.
And they’re performing a traditional dragon dance, in what they think may be the metro’s first ever.
The dragon is a staple of Chinese New Year, and symbolically represents good luck, happiness and wealth for the New Year.
The celebration falls on a different date every year, since it follows the lunar calendar.
This year, we’ll usher out the current Year of the Dragon, and welcome in the Year of the Snake for 2025.
The metro-area celebration is set for January 19th, a few days ahead of the actual Lunar New Year holiday.
The celebration will feature traditional, authentic Chinese New Year foods, games and activities for kids, vendors, and a two-hour performance.
Organizer Lexy Liu, dance captain Yao Yu, and drummer Bodhi Meier invited the Morning Show for a special behind-the-scenes look at rehearsals and spoke with Emily Welker about how parents get kids excited for Chinese New Year, what it took to get the dragon all the way to the U-S, and why it’s so important to them to share their culture with the greater community.
