LIVE: Taking F.A.S.T. Action for Stroke Survival
FARGO — May is Stroke Awareness Month, and there’s a new online tool that could help you spot the signs.
The American Stroke Association is teaming up with Sanford Health to present an online, interactive “F.A.S.T.” site.
It stands for “Face Drooping,” “Arm Weakness,” “Speech Difficulty,” and “Time to Call 911.”
The online tool uses audio and video examples to help you learn to recognize what it looks like when someone’s showing stroke symptoms.
Doctors say when it comes to spotting the signs of stroke, it’s the sudden changes you need to be on the lookout for.
When you see them, getting the person to medical care is critical, because moments can count in their chances of recovery.
And the interactive website even encourages you to take a selfie that can show you what it might look like if you’ve suffered a stroke, and to record your voice to hear what its effects might sound like so you’ll recognize it if it happens to you.
Dr. Michael Manchak, a neurologist from Sanford Health, joined the Morning Show to talk about the other symptoms of stroke you need to watch for, why even young people aren’t immune to risk, and how far treatments have come in the last few years.
