Fall Symphony Season Starts with a Local Twist

FARGO — It’s the start of the fall Masterworks concert series this weekend for the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, and they’re showcasing some fresh works composed and performed by artists with local roots.

One of them is an original composition by a Fargo native and product of both Fargo public schools and Concordia College, Adam Hochstatter.

He’s now working in Los Angeles as a professional film and video game composer.

His piece, “Noir Concerto No.1,” is a story told in music about a detective who falls in love, only to find his love interest the victim of a murder.

Hochstetter’s teacher here in Fargo, Russ Peterson, is also a musician, and a composer with the FM Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony will perform Peterson’s work, “Between Two Cultures,” which features a Native American drum group sharing the stage and the performance with the symphony.

It’s based on paintings by local artist, Star Wallowing Bull.

Peterson and conductor Christopher Zimmerman joined the Morning Show to give a sneak preview of this weekend’s performance and to talk about why featuring modern composers, especially those with ties to the region, is so critical in keeping classical music alive, relevant, and connected to modern audiences.
