The Bell in the Lake, the Norwegian Diaspora in the U.S.
MOORHEAD — It’s the 200th anniversary of the first organized Norwegian immigration to the United States.
And just in time, the region’s libraries are bringing us a celebrated Norwegian author to talk about his first novel set among the Norwegian diaspora here in our part of the U.S.
Lars Mytting is the author of “The Bell in the Lake.”
It’s the first of his three-part series that follows a family of Norwegian immigrations from the 1880s, when they arrive in the U.S., all the way through World War II.
Mytting is speaking tonight at Concordia College.
He says the book delves into how the Norwegian settlers brought with them their homeland’s faith system.
At the time, Norway was a Christian country, but its people also lived with older pagan beliefs and the Norse beliefs as well.
Mytting joined the Morning Show to talk about why he wanted to write about the first Norwegians in America, and what an old stave church with a supernatural bell does to connect the past with the future in his novel.
