Doomed Romance and Death Take the Stage in FM Opera’s “La Traviata”

FARGO — It’s one of the best-known love stories of page, stage and screen, and whether you realize it or not, you probably know the music.

And its enduring popularity is why the artists of the Fargo-Moorhead Opera are bringing Verdi’s “La Traviata” to the metro stage.

It’s the story of a scarlet woman who falls in love with a young client from a wealthy family and sacrifices everything for him — a doomed romance that still resonates to this day.

Artistic director Joshua Kohl and executive director Regina Thiel, along with accompanist Sue Nagel, joined the Morning Show to talk about “La Traviata” and why you probably know it better than you think, and why this staging and its modern sensibilities might show you a new perspective on “La Traviata’s” timeless tragedy.
