Beating Holiday Stress Series: When Grief and Loneliness Steal the “Holly-Jollys”
FARGO — It’s the first in our week-long series to help you handle holiday stress with tips on health and wellness from some of the region’s top experts.
And we’re kicking it off with one of the most stressful holiday situations you can face.
Grieving a recent death or other loss, or handling loneliness can make it much more complicated to feel your way through what’s billed as “the happiest season of all.”
And when you’re not feeling that shared sense of joy, it can put extra pressure on you in addition to navigating those losses
Dr. Alexandra Kohlhase says it’s a common impulse to avoid holiday gatherings in the wake of the loss of a recent loved one or an important relationship.
She says other people may seek comfort in support organizations we have here in the region for those who are bereaved, or those struggling with loneliness.
Kohlhase joined the Morning Show to talk about why even though talking about loss during the holidays might feel uncomfortable, you’re not alone, and how to recognize signs that separate regular bereavement from more serious indications of depression.
And, if you’re struggling with some of those symptoms including suicidal ideation, the hotline 9-8-8 is available with volunteers round-the-clock to help you get the help you need.
