Sen. Rob Kupec speaks on the rising rates of license plate tabs

MINNESOTA (KVRR) — Many Minnesota vehicle owners may be experiencing high rates to renew license plate tabs.
A law passed in 2023 raised the tax prices by about 22% to provide funding for the Minnesota Department of Transportation projects.
The state estimates tabs for cars older than 11 years will go down with a flat fee of $35 plus taxes, but for cars as new as five years, the price may be increased.
Sen. Rob Kupec of Moorhead says the rising cost of Minnesota vehicle license fees is due to the rising cost of vehicles.
“We did increase, a little bit, the fee. And then the price of cars went up – dramatically. That was based on the price of automobiles, which we didn’t expect to shoot off and become super expensive.
So I am interested in finding a solution to that,” said Kupec.
A bill was introduced in the Minnesota House to address the high prices. But the bill failed in the House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee.
