Volunteers help ‘Reforest The Red’ in Moorhead

MOORHEAD — Volunteers grabbed shovels and gathered at Rotary Park in Moorhead to plant trees near the banks of the Red River.
It is a yearly event held by River Keepers of Fargo-Moorhead, with trees supplied by the Moorhead Parks and Recreation.
Around 300 trees, consisting of native species, were planted.
The volunteers dug holes, planted the trees, and added mulch and water.
River Keepers says the trees help keep the banks of the Red River from eroding, as well as offering shade for people and animals walking along, or swimming in the Red River.
“(B)y the time the volunteers leave today at four, there’ll be 300 trees in the ground,” said River Keepers Executive Director Christine Holland. “And you can see the work that they’ve done really coming to fruition, and (…) it feels good for everybody. The event organizers and the volunteers.”
The River Keepers are scheduled to plant trees on the Fargo side of the river on September 23.
