Motorcycles are Back!

An 18–year–old motorcyclist is recovering after crashing into a school bus in Valley City yesterday.
With our warmer weather more bikers are out and that means it’s time for a safety refresher for both riders and drivers.
Sunny days are here and bikers are taking to the streets. That means others who share the road, need to watch out.
Harley Davidson of Fargo Craig Johnson said, “To be honest with you people we share the road with aren’t used to seeing us yet so that takes some time and you just have to slow down and be aware of your surroundings.”
For drivers, check your blind spots and use extreme care when passing.
Nick Willard, who’s been riding for 6 years… says after you’ve seen a crash, it’s hard to look past.
“It makes you think that you know things can happen, and that you have to pay attention and ride within your abilities,” said Nick.
And he should be concerned, last year there were 10 deaths in North Dakota and 44 in Minnesota involving a motorcycle.
While bikes have been put up for the winter, there’s one thing that all motorcyclists should do before getting back on the road.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve ridden for five minutes or 50 years, taking a Bate Safety Course and you’ll pick up things that will make you a better rider and have more fun,” said Johnson.
Riders are urged to wear fitted helmets, brightly colored clothes, and to stay alert at all times.
Although there are dangers in riding a motorcycle, Nick says it’s the best way of transportation.
“I ride my bike a lot more than any other vehicle i have so it’s fun, a good time,” said Nick.
While some would rather stay protected by the metal in their cars, it’s important to safely share the roads with our two wheeled friends.
If you’d like more information on how to sign up for motorcycle safety courses, class schedules will be available to sign up at http://www.ndmsp.com/ at 9 a.m. on April 15 for all locations.
