After being closed for 10–years, Detroit Mountain is once again booming this winter season.
Everyone from first timers to pro skiers took advantage of the extended holiday weekend to ride the slopes.
With the day off from school and work for President’s Day, skiers from all over came out to ride the Detroit Mountain slopes.
Skier enthusiast Mindy Woidtke says, “Today was President’s day. They had the day off and me and my husband took the day off so we could enjoy it as a family.”
Even employees brought their families out to enjoy all the day had to offer.
Lead Instructor Jennifer Smith says, “It’s just a great family resort. Everyone is really nice. It’s small. The kids can get around. They can ski all over the terrain. They like to be outside in the winter and fresh air. They find their friends. It’s very social for a lot of kids.”
Over 35,000 have come through in the 60–days since its reopening, allowing ski and snowboard enthusiasts explore the NEW Detroit Mountain offerings.
Marketing Director Shelly Stowman says, “We have not had a problem getting people out here. The excitement of reopening Detroit Mountain has just been bringing them in constantly and it’s a thrill.”
General Manager Jeff Staley says, “We have a tubing park where you can ride down on a series of rollers and take a magic carpet back up to the top so that’s ideal for those who don’t ski.”
Detroit Mountain is a place that people of all ages can come to not only in the winter but year ’round.
Staley adds, “This summer we’ll complete the gravity fed trails and offer lift service mountain biking in the summer time. So that should open end of June – early July.”
For now, those debating to ski or not to ski, here are some words of encouragement from a pro.
Smith says, “Come out! Try it! It’s more fun then you expect. It’s physical. You will feel accomplished when you try something new…and you can ski with your family.”
Next weekend the resort plans to have a “Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Camp” in their Scheels Terrain Park.
