“Mayor for a Day” Students Join Fargo City Commission

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Mayor Tim Mahoney had some help at Fargo City Hall by two students who are winners of the “Mayor for a Day” essay contest.

Third and fifth graders in Fargo Public Schools were asked the question: What would you do if you were mayor for a day?

Nathan Asgedom recently finished fifth grade at Kennedy Elementary while Alex Zhao completed third grade at Longfellow Elementary.

They got to tour city hall and share their winning essays during the city commission meeting.

Asgedom says, “Also I would like to lower taxes for small businesses so that the businesses would grow and give new job opportunities. And another thing that I would add is if I was mayor to ban smoking in Fargo.”

“If somebody has an idea that might help a person’s life I would use all of my power to make that idea come true. If somebody needs me I would be there as a friend and a leader,” says Zhao.

Mayor Mahoney also congratulated and thanked outgoing Commissioner Arlette Preston on her 16 years of public service.

She will be replaced on the commission next month by Michelle Turnberg.
